Jacob, Sophia Top List Of Most Popular Baby Names

MINNEAPOLIS — America’s most popular baby names for 2011 keeps a werewolf on top and sees a newcomer come to the top spot. Jacob continues its reign as most popular boy name, 13 years running, while Sophia bumps out Isabella to take top honors for the first time.

According to the Social Security list, only one new name popped into the top 10 on either list — rocketing to No. 2 overall. That name is getting some Kardashian credit, as Mason bumped out Anthony in this year’s list cracking the top 25 for the first time since 2010 when it hit No. 12.

Giant MCA Tribute Mural Recreates ‘Licensed To Ill’ Album Cover

       

The ourpouring of grief since the death of Beastie Boy Adam “MCA” Yauch has taken many forms; from the Mets players using the Beastie Boys as their walk on music, to the Red Hot Chili Peppers playing instrumental covers at their recent Newark, N.J. show. However, the altered appearance of some urban spaces suggests that the grieving and urge to pay tribute to the hip hop legend are communal, even global in scale.  A fitting street art homage to Yauch appeared in the seaside town of Brighton, England last weekend. Painted by AROE MSK of the Heavy Artillery crew, the epic 12 foot high and 64 foot long mural reproduces the cover of the Beastie Boys’ 1986 seminal debut Licensed to Ill.  The mural follows Team Entrée’s “Gratitude” tribute to Yauch in Midwood, Brooklyn last week. Against Me! Frontman To Change Genders

Well, heres something I dont think anyone saw coming. Tom Gabel is the frontman and founder of Against Me!, one of the best punk bands currently in existence. But he isnt going to be Tom Gabel much longer. Hes currently planning to begin living as a woman, and hes changing his name to Laura Jane Grace. This is apparently a real thing. More below.

Rolling Stone reports that Gabel is planning to start taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis soon. He says hes been living with gender dysphoria for years and that he feels the need to talk openly about it, since no major rock figures have done this before.

Seattle high school closed due to sick students, staff

A whooping cough outbreak will close Seattle’s Bishop Blanchet High School starting Wednesday.

Many students and some staff have been diagnosed with pertussis, Principal Kristine Brynildsen-Smith said in an e-mail to parents. More than 150 students were out sick on Tuesday, the school said.

“I am declaring an emergency closure of school for at least Wednesday (May 9) and Thursday (May 10),” Brynildsen-Smith said in her message.

Maricel Presilla wins Best Chef Mid-Atlantic for Hoboken’s Cucharamama

Maricel Presilla, the chef-owner of Hoboken’s Cucharamama and one of the nation’s leading experts on Latin American cuisine, has won the James Beard Foundation award for Best Chef in the Mid-Atlantic region after being nominated five times.

The category pits chefs in New Jersey against those in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C., and Virginia, and has been thoroughly dominated by D.C. and Philly chefs. This is the first time a chef from New Jersey has won the award in at least a decade. Previous winners in the category include Iron Chef Jose Garces and D.C.
